YEG2016: 48 Hours Later

Our party made a shocking decision this weekend.

YEG2016 - Tom at Podium

Tom Mulcair’s final speech to us as party leader on Sunday morning took place immediately prior to the all-important vote.

We were all expecting the leadership review to be a very close vote — that Tom might only barely make the 70% threshold that had been declared the previous week as the magic number.

My greatest fear then had been that we’d find ourselves at 65%, a limbo number with neither sufficient support for Tom to continue, nor low enough to trigger a leadership convention.

We were all dead wrong.

POPULUS: An #elxn42 parody (E-27)

It’s that time again: election season!

And as always, my campaign tradition is to write an election parody!

This one is based on “Popular” from my favourite musical, Wicked. I call it “POPULUS” — a reference to the name of the NDP’s new database software. I wrote the lyrics and recorded the track a few night ago, while I was up late, waiting for Populus to generate my canvass sheets.

The federal election that’s coming up on October 19th (in only 27 days) is easily the biggest and most game-changing election that I’ve worked on in my short campaign life.

I hope you’ll go vote. Here, check Elections Canada to see if you’re on the voter’s list. it only takes two minutes!

In particular, I hope you’ll vote NDP.

But even if you don’t do either (boo, hiss, shame!), I hope you’ll enjoy my parody. It was a fun little break from the mad scramble that is campaign life.

27 days left before I can take a nap…

Recap: The Kate Sellar Campaign in Toronto Centre

What a ride!

Working with the Kate Sellar campaign this spring has been an incredibly educational experience — exactly as it should have been. The Toronto Centre campaign served as excellent fertile training ground for myself as a VCO and for many others who were involved with the campaign efforts.

Now that it’s over, I finally have the chance to reflect and recap.

I'm holding the final poll sheets for TorCen, marking the end of my VCO work -- for now!

We started as soon as the writ dropped, and we hit the ground running.

Move-in day

Tomorrow is move-in day.

We secured the office a couple of days ago, and now we have furniture.
So tomorrow, we’re moving in. We’ve got a big day ahead of us.

And they’ve put me in charge of a truck.

There’s going to be a big red truck, and two big guys from a respected community organization, plus some other volunteers from other campaigns. And I’m supposed to order them around and tell them where to go.

I emailed them a game day plan earlier today, and everyone just sort of assented.

What? Why am I ordering people around?! Continue reading

E-4 — BACK AWAY FROM THE PANIC BUTTON

Four days left of campaigning.

My throat is sore. My feet are calloused. My knuckles are bruised.
How many doors have I knocked on? I don’t know, and I don’t care anymore.

I stopped counting after about 3000 doors.

And I can’t remember the last time I had REM sleep. Heh.

But we’re nearly there. Continue reading

Opened doors

Today, a thousand doors flew open for me.
Today, my future has been changed forever — for the better.

I am so ecstatic to be playing a bigger role in the campaign of this incredible candidate.

NDP: Funding for good deeds!

Excuse me while I take this moment to boast… :3

I just convinced the leaders of a major political organization to give us $450 toward printing a set of “University of Toronto NDP” t-shirts, to be worn for club events, canvassing, and the upcoming Toronto Centre by-election.

It’ll have our very own logo printed on the front. And of course, that deal comes along with a graphic designer to design a brand new logo for us (below).

This will serve as the official "unveiling" of the new logo. Thoughts? (Yes, of course it's orange.)

An update on the political climate in Toronto!

It’s heating up here in Toronto Centre!
And no, I don’t mean the weather. 😉

First of all, my goodness, I haven’t updated in nearly two weeks. Sorry.

My excuse? The race for the nomination, of course! Between participating in street canvasses, campaign kick-offs, press releases, exec meetings, meetings, and more meetings, I’ve barely had time to work 30-35 hours a week at my actual paying job… and my daily swim has been reduced to every-other-day as well.

But I believe it’ll all be worth it, once all the planning comes together!
