Even if you don’t normally follow the news, you’ve almost certainly heard about the Ford Scandal that’s been all over the media lately. It’s time for me to publish my thoughts.
First of all, if you have been keeping up with the developments like I have, this will simply present to you some of the concerns I have. And if you haven’t been, well, really, at this point in the game, it’s about time you heard, at least in the skimming-the-surface way I’m about to describe, what on Earth is going on.
Either way, this has gone on long enough. I don’t know what good my speaking up will do, but it’s about time I articulated these thoughts. If nothing else, perhaps this will cause others to think about the damage that this “scandal” has done to the city.

So… what’s happening?
Let’s begin with a short description of the backstory, shall we?
The University of Toronto is holding what some people have described as a “student orgy.” Are you shocked? Well, you’re not the only one.
[Just to be clear, this post will not include any pornographic images or other information that can be used to identify any of the participants.]
Here’s some background information. The U of T Sexual Education Centre (SEC) is hosting an event today as part of their Sexual Awareness Week. They’ve arranged for a U of T students to be able to access the facilities of a local sex club (the Oasis Aqualounge, a few blocks southeast of campus) at a heavily discounted price: $5 per person.
Before you continue reading the different angles that I’m about to share, I encourage you to take a look at this public Facebook page regarding the event, which has been named the “SAW Sexy Social,” and decide for yourself what you think.
At first I was dismissive of the event — I read the event page, expressed some surprise that people were bold enough to organize it, and then I didn’t think much more of it.
But then it blew up into a huge media spectacle. The story spread across campuses in Canada; hundreds of news publications wrote on it across Canada. The story was even picked up by a few American journalists, including a California-based network called The Young Turks. Watch the first two minutes of the video; it’ll probably provide you some insight on the event.
.
Their opinion isn’t the only one out there, though. Some groups and individuals have voiced a very contrasting view; the whole affair has become quite controversial. Controversial to the point that I felt obligated to go check it out myself. Continue reading →
In case you haven’t figured out from all of the other public media platforms (or been notified by a family member or roommate), Barack Obama has been re-elected President of the USA.
Well done. USA has steered itself away from driving our continent off the side of a cliff.
Need some aloe vera, Romney?
In not-quite-as-important news, goodness. Facebook was insane tonight. I guess it’s my own doing, surrounding myself with other people who care about politics and building up a reputation for having impassioned things to say about politics, some of which is funny or quirky. So many updates. I suppose facebook is a rather good forum for sharing updates, since we’re all checking updates from different news sources.
I'm a cyclist in Toronto, and I'm fiercely passionate for the NDP.
As of June 2014, I've graduated from the University of Toronto with a joint degree in International Relations and Peace, Conflict, and Justice -- and a minor in German, because I had to keep things interesting! These days, I work in public relations and digital communications, advocating for progressive causes like affordable public transit and protection for working families.
This blog centres around political updates, as experienced by yours truly. I comment on whatever piques my interest, from local Toronto politics, to national elections, and, of course, Europe and the Middle-East. For now, my energy is devoted to the upcoming federal election in October 2015.
Expect a bit of whimsy from time to time, too. I may post some photography, especially when I travel, and even the occasional Youtube video. Don't hesitate to comment! You can follow me on Twitter at @AngelaofTC.
