Harper’s Spending Cuts

We all know that Stephen Harper’s Conservative government has been responsible for a staggering number of cuts to social services over the years he’s spent in office.

But nobody really knows exactly how much, because the Government of Canada has never released an official list.

“Much More Of A Harper”

I have an amusing story to share today.

Recently, I referred to myself as an individual who is often harping on people to do things, reminding them to address this task or that issue. I constantly have a to-do list.

That was in direct contrast to someone else, who doesn’t nag quite so much.

I said that she “isn’t quite so much of a harper.”

… implying that I’m much more of a harper? o_o

And this was over the phone, so it’s not as though capital letters can be perceived. Whoops. You can imagine the misunderstanding that arose during that conversation.

Backtrackbacktrackbacktrack — I’m not a Harper!! 😥

Canadian Government’s Hypocrisy on the Environment

Read this article, please.

It describes how our Minister of Foreign Affairs, John Baird, recently tried to claim that Canada is committed to reducing our negative impact on climate change. Rubbish.

Meanwhile, just outside the gates of the building where Baird was speaking, 50,000 protesters were gathered in the streets of Washington, D.C. to speak out against Canada’s Keystone XL proposal.

Is that hypocrisy or what?

“Black Out Speak Out”: The Movement Against Bill C-38

Elizabeth May (Green Party) has had her fair share of criticism from across Canada. As the only Green Party member in the House of Commons, she sometimes falls victim to mockery, especially from those on the far right.

Even I admit to having a chuckle or two at her expense from time to time. But not this week.

Click this image to be redirected to the campaign website, and to learn more about why C-38 is so dangerous.

Coincidentally following up with my post last Thursday about environmental security, we now find ourselves facing up against the Conservative Party’s so-called omnibus Bill C-38.

So, what is this bill?
Let me explain, so you can understand exactly what everybody is getting upset about.

Mr. Harper’s government has put forward this bill in an effort to stimulate the economy and balance the budget. Considering the economic recession of the past four years, that sounds like a smart move. Sounds good, right?

But there’s a downside.

Even Canadian politics is not immune to Godwin’s Law

Something like this only happens a few times a year, but when it does, Canadians notice. Especially when it comes from our very own Prime Minister.

And thus, #HarperHistory was created,
mocking other ridiculous accusations about the NDP’s history.

Explanation available on dozens of online news journals, but here’s one of the more succinct.

Some of my favourites?
“The NDP killed Bambi’s mother.”
“The Titanic sank after it collided with the NDP.”
“The NDP is Don Cherry’s personal stylist.”

Good job, Stephen Harper. You’ve just made a meme out of yourself.

The latest hotbed issue: same-sex marriage

It’s been getting a lot of media attention lately, especially in Canada: an Ontario judge has denied a lesbian couple’s plea to file for divorce, because they have been living in Florida and the UK, both of which have laws that prohibit same-sex marriage. By this logic, the judge has ruled that these two women are technically not married in their home countries and therefore cannot file for divorce.

To get a better idea of the issue, try this article on the Globe and Mail.
Or this one, from CBC, which shows a slightly more subjective view.

Now, I think it’s about time somebody clarify some misunderstandings that I’ve seen going rampant.

1) People are attacking the Mr. Harper and the Conservative government.

This is ridiculous.
I will say, right now, that I’m not a fan of our current Prime Minister. But I think we should give him what he deserves, and in this case, he deserves NOT to be blamed for something that he didn’t do. Continue reading
