Basic Etiquette for the Big City

This article was designed for a trip to NYC.  As someone who loves the occasional visit to New York, I’m finding it very useful.

This. Happens. All. The. Time.

But you know what? Most of these tips are extremely helpful even if you live in a different big city… oh, I don’t know… like maybe here in Toronto?

Check it out here.

Good news.

First of all, Pride was yesterday. Our NDP fundraiser went incredibly well, much better than expected. Turnout was amazing, and Mulcair high-fived me and called me out as “Wonder Woman” in front of the crowd, which was a really nice little touch. A lot of MPs showed up, even a few who originally said they wouldn’t be able to make it.

Fundraising total hasn’t been added up yet, but I’m looking forward to hearing a five-digit report — of which we’re going to need every penny in order to win the upcoming by-election in Toronto-Centre, now that Bob Rae (Liberal) has resigned.

I’m exhausted now, partially because of that and partially because I’ve been working 7-8-hour shifts every day since Wednesday, and my apartment is strewn with Pride decorations that I was making.

But one final bit of good news before I collapse Continue reading

It’s freezing here.

I just arrived in Montreal last night, and I’m staying at the home of a friend. BUT IT’S -17 DEGREES HERE! T_T And with windchill, it’s -31. EW EW EW EW EW.

I actually can’t really handle this. I’ve never experienced that sort of weather before. GAH. T_T It terrifies me and my ears nearly fell off. THE HORROR. But hopefully I’ll be a little more used to it by the time I leave, so I’ll have acclimatized by the time the dead of winter hits Toronto next month. I hope. O_O

On another note, here are some of my travel videos from the New York leg of my trip!

There are four videos.
This first one is from when I was ambling through the crowds of shoppers on 5th Avenue.

The glorious District of Columbia

[I’m back in Toronto now as I post this, by the way.]

People seem so surprised whenever I tell them that while I loved New York, I simply ADORED Washington, DC. But it’s true. Perhaps it’s because of all the political history, of the monuments, of the absolutely crucial national and international institutions that exist there. Perhaps it’s because that is the centre of everything that makes the USA truly function as a nation-state, and possibly (though it pains me to admit) still the most powerful in the world today.

Of course New York is filled with culture and certainly plenty of history, and of course it’s home to the financial centre of USA, but as a whole, it just doesn’t carry quite the same charge. Everything that happened there was so organic, but the history of Washington, DC was constructed. And for a purpose. And it shows how much can happen when everybody gets together and wants something so badly that they’re willing to fight for it and debate for it and build an entire city in order to house the idea and the institution of it. I guess it’s largely symbolic, but really, Washington, DC is one of the most amazing places in North America that I’ve seen. And I’m not even American! hahaha

Now, enough raving about the awesomeness of the city, and let’s get onto some photos, shall we?

TADA! It's the US Capitol. I'm almost as tall as it is! 😉

Bye-bye Manhattan

Well, that leg of the trip is over. And I’m sad to leave indeed. 😦
IT WAS TOO SHORT! T_T

The sun has set over my journey... both literally AND metaphorically. 😉

I’m sad to leave, but let me just share a few shots I took in the city before I left. 🙂

OH! And of course, I also had the chance to meet up with Jessica from Herstmonceux Castle last year, with her friend Joe. THAT WAS COOL.

We had some exciting photo-ops with some pretty famous locations… Continue reading

NYC: It’s the (Big) Apple of my eye!

Hah, I’m so punny. 🙂

Well, I arrived in NYC yesterday morning at about 5:30 AM. It was cold, but there were still a lot of people out. Not crowds, perhaps, but there were always a handful of people outside near me. Heh.

About five minutes after getting off the bus, I stumbled across Times Square. Yeah. Complete accident, but hey, there we go! 🙂 A happy accident indeed. And I was tired and groggy and somewhat cold, but I was so happy to see all the lights and shiny colours. Like a child. hahaha

The first photo taken of me in New York City! 😀 Of course it was at Times Square. 😉

I’ve already taken nearly 600 photos since arriving, so don’t worry, my darlings, there will be many more to come. The uploading might take a while, though. T_T

I’m going to keep this short, since it’s getting late and I’ve slept about 6 hours in total since I left Toronto on the 9th. T_T Anyways, a few comments on what I’ve noticed about NYC:

Waiting in a winter wonderland

After all the inconclusive discussion and self-debating of the past week, I decided to go to New York after all. Except I made the mistake of deciding a little late. With my frantic packing-unpacking-repacking of last night, I got to bed fairly late and didn’t hear my alarm.

And as a result, I missed my bus.
Fortunately, there are empty seats on the next bus, so the trip hasn’t been cancelled altogether.

I’m sitting here at the Starbucks across from the Coach Station right now, where I’ve already spent the last three hours. Because it turns out the next bus to New York City isn’t until 7 PM tonight… and yet there’s no point going home to wait. I have a book, I have a laptop, and I’ve spent all this effort getting my luggage up and down the non-accessible TTC stairs. So here I am, waiting. Only 3 hours left!

The fact that my bus doesn’t leave till 7 PM also means that it’ll be one of those much-longer-time-on-the-road overnight trips. So I won’t actually arrive in New York until around 5:30 AM tomorrow morning. On the bright side, it means I won’t be finding my hotel in the frigid night air at midnight like originally planned. On the downside, it means that I’m wasting a night’s stay at a somewhat nice hotel. And that in itself is a pity, because it was originally booked for two.

Sigh.

I’m still somewhat angry that you cancelled on me, you know that?
